Yellow leaves

Yellow leaves on houseplants: what to check first

Yellow leaves are common, but they do not always mean the same thing. One plant may be drying out, another may be sitting in wet soil, and another may simply be dropping an older leaf.

Check water and drainage

Feel the soil before watering again. If the pot feels heavy and the top stays damp, give the roots more time to breathe. If the soil pulls away from the pot and feels dry deep down, the plant may need a slower soak.

Check light changes

A plant that moved closer to a hot window or into a dim corner can respond with yellowing. Look at where the newest leaves are growing and whether the plant is leaning toward light.

Check pests and roots

Look under leaves and near stems. Small dots, webbing, sticky areas, or weak new growth can point to a pest problem. If the plant has been struggling for a while, roots and drainage may also need attention.
